Tracey here from Pop Blitz Magazine. We are talking with Kyle Massey, who plays "Cory Baxter" on Disney Channel’s "That’s So Raven". Kyle, can you please introduce yourself?
Hi, I’m Kyle Massey and I play Cory on “That’s So Raven”. *laughs*
What was your best Christmas gift?
I have two. It would have to be my motorcycle and my arcade games.
Motorized motorcycle?
Motorized motorcycle.
Sweet.
I know. I have a Yamaha.
Cool. You got your first acting job at an audition of your brothers for the Wizard of Oz. Tell us about that.
Oh that, that was quite a day I tell ya *laughs* I never go on auditions with my brother. I always stay home and that was the one time. It was quite interesting. I’d never done anything like it. I usually stay home, but I decided to go and the lady pulled me in there and I got the job. And my brothers like what, oh this is cool. It was pretty funny.
And what was he like when you got it?
I didn’t even think I’d got it, cos I wasn’t supposed to do it, so he was just like “aw stop playing, really? Cool” so it really didn’t register that I’d gotten a job cos I wasn’t in the whole acting circle, so it really didn’t register that I got a job. It was like cool. When I got that part I was like mom I wanna go again, more more more.
Was it the same part he was trying out for or something different?
Same part he was trying out for, a munchkin.
At least he was cool about it.
Yeah he was cool about it, said at least one of us got it.
That’s the right way to think.
Yeah.
How did you react when you got the role of Cory Baxter?
Same way. It really didn’t register that I’d gotten the job until table reading, and I met all the cast. When the table reading was over I was like “I’m so excited!” I really don’t get excited until after we do it and it’s over. Then I get my costars that I’m going to be working with and it’s so much fun.
What is it like working with Raven?
She’s awesome. Raven’s cool. She takes me around everywhere. But work-wise she’s awesome, professional actress. She’s taught me a lot. She taught me etiquette on and off set, and she’s a really good role model.
So then you get along a lot better then you do, your characters.
*Laughs* Oh yeah, Cory and Raven they’re brother and sister. But me and Raven, we’re true brother and sister.
That’s awesome.
Josh: Raven seems like a pretty cool girl, from being on tv and everything. She seems really laid back.
Oh yeah she’s cool. She’s not stuck up or anything. She’s really down to earth.
Josh: That’s a good thing in this business.
Yeah some people get stuck up.
Yeah *laughs*
There is a lot of crazy stuff that happens on “That’s So Raven”. What was the most fun episode to shoot?
The most fun episode to shoot, lets see. All of them. We’ve never had a bad episode. All of them, but probably my favorite episode was probably my X-
Games one, when I was skateboarding. It taught me a different way of acting. I did something new, that I had never tried before. And doing something new for 4 hours a day.
I’m not sure if I’ve seen that one or not.
Yeah it was a fun episode.
I know the one last night was like reviewing all the weird things that happened, all the crazy visions.
Yeah.
Your character has played a lot of pranks. What was the best one, and do you ever play pranks yourself?
Oh wow. I don’t even know where to begin. Cory’s done so many pranks, and oh my goodness. Lets see, all of them. I think Cory is a prank genius. But have I ever pranked someone? Yes, I have. I think the best prank, is probably the worst one I have ever done. It was awhile ago, but I just remembered it, cos it was so bad. What we did is we had this costar, he was trying to get backstage, and we were trying to get back at him. So we filled this mixing bowl with ketchup, and all this stuff, dirt and everything. Big bucket, and we pulled the string and it dumped on his head and it was bad.
Did you take a picture? You should have taken a picture, recorded it, played it back.
*Laughs*
You received an Emmy nomination (Best Children’s Program) for “That’s So Raven”. What was it like being up against your brother?
You know what? It was just a better experience. Neither one of us was like, you know “I hope I win, I hope I win. Whoever wins is going to be a better actor.” We both won, just by being nominated.
Yeah I’d say so.
When you win an Emmy, and you walk onstage, you walk away with a trophy. When you’re in the audience you win, you just don’t get a trophy for it. It was fine. It was fun actually. We were both sitting there, and neither one of us were like “I hope I win I hope I get this.” If I win I’m not going to be mad at you and if he wins he’s not going to be mad at me. It was fun.
Yeah, that’s cool. You’re brother actually said your show deserved to win.
Oh really?
Yeah, we asked him the same question.
What’s that?
