Tracey: Tracey here, from Pop Blitz Magazine. We are talking to up and coming pop artist, Katelyn Tarver. Katelyn, can you please introduce yourself?
Katelyn: I am Katelyn Tarver. I’m 16 years old, and I’m from Glennville, Georgia.
Tracey: You will be hitting the road in a few days for the Radio Disney “Incubator” tour. How psyched are you?
Katelyn: I am so excited for it, I cannot wait. It’s going to be so much fun. I’m ready.
Tracey: What made you decide to be a singer?
Katelyn: Well I was growing up with music all the time, mom sings, and dad plays the guitar, all that stuff. I’ve grown up singing in church, around town, you know little talent shows. It’s just always been really fun, I’ve always enjoyed it.
Tracey: What kind of music do you listen to? Does it influence your singing at all?
Katelyn: I listen to so many genres of music. I mean I like pop music. I really like Kelly Clarkson, people like that. But I also listen to people like John Mayer, and Jack Johnson. Music like that I really like. I like to listen to Contemporary Christian music like Joy Williams and Stacy Orrico. So those are the different types of music I like to listen to. I’ve always liked people with big voices, that can really belt it out. That’s really influenced me.
Tracey: Speaking of Christian music, do you like Jump 5 at all?
Katelyn: Yeah, I do. I haven’t listened to them in awhile. I listened to them when I was younger. I haven’t really heard any of their more current stuff, but yeah their cool.
Tracey: Yeah, you should check out their new stuff, it’s a lot different, a lot more grown up.
Katelyn:Yeah, yeah, I’ll have to do that.
Tracey: We actually just did an interview with Chris the other day.
Katelyn: Oh really? Awesome. Well I’ll have to listen to them.
Tracey: You will be starring in “The Barbie Diaries”. What can you tell us about the movie?
Katelyn: It was an animated movie for Mattell, and we did motion capture on it, and I was Barbie. Kind of like the polar express, Barbie movement. So it’s kind of weird for the most thing, but it was really cool. It was a lot of fun.
Tracey: How did it feel when you got the title role? What was going through your head?
Katelyn: It was just, kind of very surprised. I had been on so many auditions, and I almost didn’t go to the audition because I was doing the photo shoot for my album cover that day, so I didn’t know if I was going to be able to go. But I ended up being able to go and I got a reading, and I didn’t think anything would come of it. But then I found out I got a callback and I went and checked it out. They tested out people, and it was just really cool. I was very surprised.
Tracey: What do you like better, acting, modeling, or singing?
Katelyn: Definitely singing. It’s what I really love to do, I love to perform. That’s the main thing. But modeling has been fun, so has my little bit of acting that I’ve done. Everything.
Tracey: Valentine’s Day was a few days ago. What is your all-time best Valentine’s Day memory?
Katelyn: Aww, this was probably my first Valentine’s Day, with a guy, you know. So this Valentine’s Day was good. We actually, he lives 6 hours away. I met him through my best friend, its her cousin. He sent me stuff through the mail, and he sent me like all these Hershey kisses in this box, and then the card that he wrote said “Here is a kiss for every time I’ve thought of you”. It was cute, it was sweet. But it was fun.
Tracey: That’s sweet.
Katelyn: Yeah.
Tracey: Of all the sayings (princess, angel, drama queen, diva, flirt, etc.) what would you classify yourself as?
Katelyn: Hmmm definitely don’t think I’m a diva. I would say, what are the choices again?
Tracey: Well, it doesn’t have to be any of those. Those are just examples.
Katelyn: Oh.
Tracey: Could be whatever.
Katelyn: So you want me to describe myself then kind of?
Tracey: Just kind of like princess, drama queen, angel any of those.
Katelyn: I would say, sometimes I can be a little dramatic but I don’t think I’m a drama queen. I don’t really think, I’m just fun, and most of the time outgoing. I’m a pretty positive girl, I guess you could say. I don’t really know how to describe myself in those words.
Tracey: So basically none of those sayings out there really fit.
Katelyn: Yeah.
Tracey: I know there are a bunch more I’m missing, but those are the one’s I could think of.
Katelyn: Yeah, that’s fine.
Tracey: Okay, we got a bunch of fan questions from Myspace.
Katelyn: Mmmhmm.
Tracey: Okay, first one. Do you still keep in touch with the other American Juniors? - Pakaou
Katelyn: I try to. I talk to them, not very often, but I’m getting ready to go out to Los Angeles, so I’ll probably call a few of them, and see if we can meet up. I just saw Lucy back in November. I used to talk to Chantel a lot, but I haven’t talked to her in awhile. But I try to keep in touch with a few. I haven’t talked to them in awhile, but.
Tracey: Was there anyone from the show that you didn’t get along with that well? - Connie
Katelyn: Um, no. We all, it might sound cheesy, but we all got along really well. It was a lot of fun for us, you know we were, the oldest people there were 13, so we were all just really excited about what we were doing, and that we had the opportunity. So it was all fun. Yeah, we all got along really good.
Tracey: Well, that’s good. Makes things more fun then.
Katelyn: Yes.
Tracey: A lot easier.
Katelyn: Yeah.
Tracey: What do you like to do for fun? - Kimberly
Katelyn: For fun, I would say just hang out with my friends you know. I’m gone a lot, and I’m home schooled this year. So whenever I get to hang out with them is always a lot of fun. We always have fun when we’re together. But you know, we’re from a small town. There’s not much to do, but you know we usually just go over to each others houses, or we go to the movies which is like 45 minutes away.
Tracey: Wow. Where do you like to shop? - Christie
Katelyn: I like a lot of places. I like Urban Outfitters. They have some really cool stuff. I don’t know. I would say that’s probably my favorite place to shop.
Tracey: How do you handle fame? – Christie
Katelyn: I don’t really consider myself famous right now. I mean it’s weird, but I don’t know, it’s just keep yourself surrounded with your friends and your family who have known you forever, and won’t treat you, you know like you’re so great. Stay grounded, and surround yourself with people that love you and that you trust.
Tracey: Exactly. I hate, some people get such a big head when they get famous.
Katelyn: Right.
Tracey: I mean, I just think of you know musicians, and actors as normal people. They just have a different job. You know, they don’t work at McDonalds, they act or sing.
Katelyn: Right, exactly. That’s how I see it too.
Tracey: Final question. Is there anything you would like to say to Pop Blitz and its readers?
Katelyn: Just thank you. Thank you for all of your support, and your encouragement, and checking out my website. Please vote for my song on Radio Disney.
Special thanks to Katelyn, and her dad. Also to the following fans for questions: Connie,
Pakaou,
Kimberly, and
Christie.
