Tracey here from Pop Blitz Magazine, along with special guest Josh who is going to be recording. We are talking with Amy Bruckner, who plays “Pim Diffy” on Disney Channel’s, “Phil of the Future”. Amy, could you please introduce yourself?
Amy: Hi, it’s Amy! *laughs*
We talked to Devon Werkheiser on Monday. He spoke highly of you, said you were good friends.
Amy: Yeah, I love him.
He’s a pretty sweet kid.
Amy: Yeah we’ve been friends for awhile. We actually came to LA together. We grew up in Georgia, and our careers have lined. We got shows at the same time. We really started working at the same time. It’s kind of been nice to have a friend that knows what you are going through.
That’s really cool.
Amy: Yeah.
Disney Channel stars and Nickelodean stars seem like one big happy family, everyone hangs out. Is that true, and who from the show or other Disney or Nickelodean shows do you keep in touch with?
Amy: Disney shows, I know all the Disney kids. We’re all really good friends. From Nickelodean shows you know from Devon’s show I know all those kids, really good kids. I know a bunch of the kids from UnFabulous and from Zoey but I don’t really know anyone from Drake and Josh, cos that’s kind of an older crowd. But I know almost everyone on Zoey and I know a couple of people from Unfabulous. You know there’s no real rivalry. You would expect there to be, but there isn’t. Devon and I joke about it, but we don’t really care.
We’ve been hearing rumors about Phil of the Future being cancelled. Is there any truth to that?
Amy: Yeah that’s absolutely true. Phil was cancelled on Friday, so we are officially cancelled.
How does that make you feel?
Amy: We knew that there was a big chance that it would not be picked up. It’s kind of a win win for me because if it had gotten picked up I love everyone on the show and I would have gone back and done a 3rd season and been completely happy but you know now that it hasn’t been picked up that lets me go on and do other things so you know it’s certainly I’m going to miss everyone so much I’m going to miss seeing them everyday but you know there’s Disney Channels a stepping stone that’s how I’m looking at them so hopefully that’ll move on to other things.
Exactly, get movie roles and stuff.
Amy: Right, correct.
Phil of the Future uses many futuristic gadgets. If you could invent one, what would you call it and what would it do?
Amy: Ooh while they were talking about different gadgets that you would like to have I wanted to make one that like so you didn’t have to even spray the food that you know you could take your lunch box to school and you could open it up and you could have a whole lunch made for you. That would be one of them.
That would be cool.
Amy: Yeah I mean we were thinking of so many of them that day, but that was one of them. That was the one that sticks out in my mind.
What would you have called that?
Amy: I don’t know, the lunch box o-matic *laughs*
Works for me. What’s the coolest thing you have used on set?
Amy: As far as gadgets go the most fun is the skyak because they have this, you know they have this skyak but it’s on this huge green screen and then you sit on it. You sit in front of a green screen and it moves. It’s really like you’re sitting on something that’s flying, so you know that’s by far the most fun gadget to use because the other one’s are all special effects, so that one you get to be a little more hands on.
Are you anything like your character Pim?
Amy: I wouldn’t really say I was anything like Pim *laughs* Pim’s kind of brash and she doesn’t really, she’s a little bit evil and she’s from the future and has a brother and doesn’t like school so *laughs* we don’t really share much in common but it’s really fun to get to play a character who’s so mean and evil. You get to yell at people so I’d like to say I’m a much nicer person.
She doesn’t seem to care what she says.
Amy: Yeah she doesn’t care what people think. I mean I think deep down she does, but I think that she actually, deep down she loves her family and has insecurities just like everyone else.
Yeah. You did a movie, “Rebound” with Martin Lawrence. What can you tell us about that?
Amy: Well on rebound it was my first big feature film and I didn’t realize how different films are from television and so you just have, I mean it’s kind of like hurry up and like it gave me a lot of time to interact with the cast. I have several really good friends I made from that movie. I liked the character, because she was really different then Pim, and still different than me. She was a kind of boy crazy and she’s a little bit of the sidekick, but you know she got more lines as the movie went on. You know it was great being around all of those comedians, you know Megan Mullally, Horatio Sanz, and you know Martin Lawrence so it was really good.
When will it be out?
Amy: It is already out. It will be out on DVD this month.
There are sayings on everything (flirt, angel, drama queen, etc.) What are you?
Amy: Random. I mean it’s just whatever I’m feeling that day. I wouldn’t call myself an angel or a drama queen *laughs* but I would just call myself random. Yeah, my friends would describe me as that. There’s actually these lines of shirts and we’ve been bothered by those shirts, that just say what the shirt is like army green tank top or purple shirt so now we’ve been wearing those. So many people wear one’s that say like “make boys cry” so yeah.
What’s on your wish list this Christmas?
Amy: Lots of cd’s, lots of cd’s, mostly cd’s. An ipod, but I don’t think that’s going to happen *laughs* I mean I’m so across the board I’m just asking people for gift cards because there’s like tons of cd’s I want. I’m really excited to see what my friend Skylar gets me. As her Christmas present I took her to a Jason Mraz concert so she’s like “that was like the ultimate present” so everyone’s saying what she got me is really good so I’m waiting to see what she got me.
Yeah Devon said he wanted an Ipod.
Amy: Mine’s the second version, so you know it doesn’t have the wheel that actually turns, but it’s really tiny and sensitive, like everybody always goes “you have the ghetto old school one” but yeah I want to get one.
Does your family have any Christmas traditions? What is your favorite?
Amy: I mean we do kind of a thanksgiving thing on Christmas, we sit at the table and we always say our blessings, what we’re thankful for. Then we eat dinner. On Christmas eve we always open one present and then in the morning whoever wakes up first gets to open their present first. There’s something to say that we always decorate the tree together so I think Christmas is a tradition in itself.
Who are your top 5 bands and singers?
Amy: Right now probably #1 Jason Mraz, he was amazing in concert. #2 probably James Blunt, 3 My Chemical Romance, 4 this is so hard, probably, oh goodness this band called Fly, and then 5 would be who do I really like, I would probably say there’s so many, it’s hard to pick. I really like this new band called Hot Hot Heat so they are really good.
Wide variety there.
Amy: Yeah I know it’s like everything from pop rock to like punk. I like everything.
Well that’s good. What do you like to do when you are not on set?
Amy: I’m kind of a nerd. I love reading or hanging out with friends. I have the best friends ever so we always hang out. Music, you know Ricky from the show he’s really into music too so we’re always playing new music for each other. You know hanging out, I really like it. I am such a nerd. You know my best friend and I go on hikes and stuff, so that’s really fun so yeah just hanging out with friends when I have free time.
That’s fun itself.
Amy: Yeah we have a good time.
